Roselyn Marie (Moening) Matchinsky

October 26, 2026 by Hometown News

Roselyn Marie (Moening) Matchinsky, 86, of Melrose, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, and love.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2027, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15, followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m. at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.
Born January 21, 1940, in Melrose to Fred and Zita (Herzog) Moening, Roselyn met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, James “Jim” Matchinsky. Married for 61 years, they built a life filled with adventure, hard work, and family.
Together, they raised five children while owning and operating numerous businesses. Their journey took them through Minneapolis, Wichita, Cleveland, Eau Claire, and Melrose before settling in Tempe, Arizona, in 1980. They later purchased a home on Big Birch Lake in Minnesota, their happy place, where they cherished time with family and friends while splitting their years between Arizona and the lake. From banking and restaurants to a Hardware Hank store and eventually BCT, a wholesale printing company, Roselyn balanced entrepreneurship with her greatest accomplishment: raising her family.
A woman of deep faith, Roselyn was active in her church and community. Having survived four life-threatening illnesses, she earned her reputation as a fighter, facing life’s challenges with remarkable strength, determination, and an unwavering positive attitude.
Roselyn loved playing cards, spending time with her sisters and girlfriends, occasional trips to the casino, and playing golf. She also enjoyed keeping Jim in line, a responsibility she took seriously for 61 years.
Christmas was her favorite time of year. Her famous chicken salad, caramel popcorn, sandbakkels, and spicy pretzels were family staples. Her grandchildren will forever remember Nana’s unconditional love and how she made each of them believe they were her favorite.
Of course, when Roselyn called you by your full name, trouble was coming. And then there was the legendary “German thumb,” something her family will never forget.
Above all, Roselyn was the heart of her family. She taught her children and grandchildren that faith carries us through difficult times and that family always comes first, no matter how different we may be.
Roselyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; her parents, Fred and Zita Moening; and her siblings Kenneth, Mary, Arlene, and Ernest.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Jill), Ann (Kevin), Wendy (Mark), Karl, and Gary (Susie); 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her siblings LeEtta (Dolan), LouAnn, Barbara (Robert), and Debra.
Just days before her passing, Roselyn spent a lovely day shopping with her sister LouAnn and daughters Ann and Wendy, enjoying life’s simple pleasures and the company of those she loved. After a lifetime of overcoming challenges, her final goodbye was peaceful.
Nana left us with one final lesson: Tomorrow is not promised. Love your family, cherish the moments, and never take a single day for granted.
Memorials can be made in Rose’s memory to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 755 E. Kraft Drive, Melrose, MN 56352.
Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.
