UPDATED INFORMATION- March 29, 2022
On March 26, 2022, Emmanuel Galen Johnson (Smurf), 21, was arrested in Harvey, Illinois on the warrant issued for 1st Degree Aggravated Robbery with a firearm, 2nd Degree Assault with a firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The arrest was without incident, and he remains in custody in the Cook County Jail, Illinois. Johnson is awaiting extradition to Minnesota.
The Avon Police Department would like to formally thank all the agencies that were involved with the initial gunshot shooting call and the ongoing investigation assistance to locate Johnson. With the collaborative efforts of all the agencies, the successful arrest was executed without further injuries to others or law enforcement.
This case will remain under investigation and is currently being prosecuted by the Stearns County Attorney’s Office.
UPDATED INFORMATION- March 10, 2022
The victim in this case was treated at North Memorial Hospital in the Twin Cities area. As of this morning, March 10, his condition was listed as “stable”. A criminal complaint has been signed charging Grant Alexander Monaghan, 20, of St. Cloud, with Aiding and Abetting 1st degree Robbery involving a Dangerous Weapon and Aiding and Abetting 2nd Degree Assault-Dangerous Weapon. The investigation is active and on-going. The Avon Police Department and Steans County Sheriff’s Office have identified the passenger in Monaghan’s vehicle and the individual alleged to have fired the shot injuring the victim as Emmanuel Galen Johnson, 21, of St. Cloud. Avon Gunshot Call- March 8, 2022
On March 8, 2022, at approximately 9:28 AM, the Avon Police Department responded to a gunshot call in the 300 Block of Char Avenue NE in the City of Avon. The initial call to the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center was that a male had reported he had been shot in the chest. The male victim was further reported to be conscious and breathing. The Avon Police Department responded to the scene and was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, the Central Minnesota Violent Offenders Task Force, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division, the St. Joseph Police Department, the Belgrade Police Department, the Albany Police Department, and the Cold Spring-Richmond Police Department. The Avon Fire Department, Mayo Ambulance Service, and North Air Care Helicopter also responded the scene. The 18-year-old victim was flown to North Memorial Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. The Avon Police Department is currently investigating the incident and is being assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division. During the initial portion of the call, the Avon Elementary School was placed into lockdown for a short period of time. Investigating officers are still working the case; however, at this time there is no ongoing danger to the public as this is not believed to be a random incident. As this is an active and ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
