Herbert L. “Herb” Schilling

Herbert L. “Herb” Schilling, age 95, formerly of Grey Eagle, died Friday, August 21, 2015 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, August 25 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard with interment following in the parish cemetery.
Herbert LeRoy Schilling was born March 4, 1920 in Woodworth, North Dakota to Joseph and Mary (Barnard) Schilling. After high school he worked at Cargill Manufacturing in Minneapolis. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II from 1942 to 1945. After serving his country he returned to Minneapolis and worked as a city bus driver for nine years and then worked for Orfie and Sons for 32 years as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. In 1979 he moved to Grey Eagle. After retirement he worked part-time for a company that delivered trailers all over Minnesota and drove truck for Ewing Potato Farm. He had been a resident of CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie since, February of 2013.
As a young man he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 1986 they went traveling in their RV. He loved dancing and playing music with his band in Texas. He also enjoyed woodcrafting. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 1140, and Operating Engineers Union, Local 49.
Herb is survived by his lifelong love of 49 years, Linda Rohde; six children, Gayle (Larry) Woodbury, Donald Schilling, Maureen (Rick) Bailey, Danette (Jim) Rogers, Kevin (Diane) Schilling, and Ken (Diane) Schilling; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald “Jerry” Schilling; son-in-law, Dick Madsen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandy Madsen; son, Ronald Schillling; and Dino, his dog of 19 years.
Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.
