Lake Koronis Incident

January 20, 2026 by Hometown News

On January 17, 2026, at approximately 12:25 p.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a vehicle breaking through the ice on Lake Koronis, near the Veterans Park Access. The caller was reporting that the vehicle had only partially broken through, and that all occupants were out of the vehicle.

Upon arrival, Stearns County Deputies learned that Kyle Vierzba, 33, of Montrose and Shawn Vierzba, 52, of Little Canada were in a 2003 Nissan Frontier on the lake when they felt the truck starting to break through the ice. They were able to escape the vehicle safely and return to shore before calling 911. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was removed from the lake by Andy’s Towing.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public to be mindful of changing ice conditions on the many lakes throughout Stearns County.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Paynesville Fire Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Allina Ambulance, and Andy’s Towing.
