Roger A. Gates, age 74 passed away suddenly on October 19, 2018 in Green Valley, AZ, formerly of Burtrum, MN.
A Celebration of Roger’s Life service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, Minnesota on November 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation prior to the service at 10:00 at Trinity Lutheran.
Roger was born April 22, 1944 in Minneapolis to the late Raymond and Delores Gates.
Roger started his professional career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He then transitioned to the Minneapolis Police Department where he served for 21 years. During this time he also served for 9 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he reached the position of First Sergeant. In 1975 he was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army.
Roger was united in marriage to Linda (Kuehne) on June 2, 1979 in Grey Eagle, MN and made Central MN their home where they had 3 children; Kristin, Laura and Daniel.
Roger retired from the Minneapolis Police Department in 1987. Roger and Linda then purchased the Hub Supper Club on Long Lake in Burtrum, Minnesota where they owned and operated the business for 9 years. Roger later decided to return to Law Enforcement with the Todd County Sheriff’s Department part time working Water Patrol and in 1995 he was appointed the fulltime role as Under Sheriff where he served for 2 years. Following this term he continued as a Deputy for 6 years and later worked part time as Court Room Security. He then retired from Law Enforcement for the second time of his career, with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office in 2014.
He received many Military and Law Enforcement expert marksmanship awards and commendations during his time in the U.S. Army Reserve and within his Law Enforcement career.
Roger loved being a husband, father, grandfather and being with his family. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, and golfing, spending time with his many friends and walking his dog Pierce.
Roger is survived by his wife, Linda of 39 years; daughters, Kristin Gates-Johnson, Laura Gates (Tyler Rudy) and son, Daniel (Kristin) Gates; brother, Raymond (Jeanne) Gates of Eagan, Minnesota; grandchildren, Devon, Peyton, Kailee, Avery (Kristin); Cole, Addison, Finley, Nolan and another granddaughter arriving in December (Laura); Lauren, Hattie and Ava (Daniel); as well as many nephews and nieces.
