Rose L. Schmidt

Rose L. Schmidt, age 92 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiated with interment following in the parish cemetery.
Rose Lena Martin was born on January 10, 1922 at home on the family farm near Lefor, North Dakota to Bernhardt and Katherine (Zillich) Martin. She was fourth in line from a family of ten. When just a youngster; she moved with her parents to a farm near Gladstone, North Dakota. She attended school in Gladstone for 12 years. After she completed high school, she worked for several years and then attended Dickinson Teacher’s College to become certified to teach in a rural school. She taught until she got married. On November 17, 1947 she was united in marriage to Carl Schmidt at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Gladstone, North Dakota. After marriage, she became a homemaker. Their first home was near Dickinson, North Dakota where both children, Rodney and Patricia, were born while they lived there. In 1952, they moved to a farm near Wadena, Minnesota and lived there until 1988 when they bought a hobby farm near Grey Eagle, Minnesota.
Rose’s hobbies were sewing, quilting, baking, and gardening. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Christian Mothers, and the Mission Group.
Survivors include her son, Rodney (Kathy) Schmidt of Albert Lea; daughter, Patricia (Dennis) Lye of Taylor Mill, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Peter (Susan) Schmidt, Angela (Chad) Duerkop, Philip (Jennifer) Schmidt, Rebecca Trafton, Adam (Leah) Lye, Bethany (Tony) Miga, and Benjamin Lye; great grandchildren, Sam, Sylvia, Sawyer, Jett, Tucker, Megan, Brooke, and Lawson; sister, Mary Miller of Minot, North Dakota; brothers-in-law, Conrad Schmidt of Wadena and Albert Smebakken of Gillette, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Schmidt on February 17, 2004; parents, Bernhardt and Katherine Martin; brothers, Frank, Bernhart, Peter, William, and Henry Schmidt; and sisters, Ann Birdsall Schiwal, Elizabeth “Betty” Schmidt, and Kathryn “Kate” Smebakken.
Serving as casket bearers were Peter Schmidt, Philip Schmidt, Chad Duerkop, and Benjamin Lye. Gift bearers were Megan and Brooke Schmidt. Reader was Rita Greff. Honorary bearers were Rebecca Trafton, Angela Duerkop, Bethany Miga, Adam Lye, and Tony Miga.
Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.
