On April 8, 2023, at approximately 5:21 p.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a capsized kayaker on the Sauk River between Highway 15 and Heim’s Mill. The overturned kayaker, who was helped out of the water by a passerby, was reporting that he couldn’t locate his son who had been with him in a separate kayak.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office along with St. Cloud Fire Department, St. Cloud Police Department, and the Department of Natural Resources all responded to the area to attempt to locate the missing kayaker.
The missing kayaker was located safe in his kayak as he approached the Heim’s Mill landing. Both parties were checked by medical staff and cleared. The kayakers were reunited at Heim’s Mill. The capsized kayak was recovered by the St. Cloud Fire Department.
