On Sunday, August 10, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a fisherman who observed an anomaly on his sonar finder while fishing on the Mississippi River near County Road 1 in the City of Sartell. The fisherman believed the anomaly to be a car in the river. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol responded and observed the same thing as the fisherman and marked the location for further research.
The Stearn-Benton County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team organized a dive team search for the area on August 13th. At approximately 10:00 a.m. on August 13th the dive team located a car in the river bottom. The car was half full of sediment although dive team members were able to determine the car appeared to be from the 1960’s era. The dive team contacted a local tow company to assist in the removal of this car. At the time of this release the car has not been removed from the river.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office in regard to a missing person case from September 25, 1967; however, at this time it is unknown if this car is related to that missing person case. Both Stearns County and Benton County Sheriff’s Offices are not aware of any other missing person cases of interest in the area. Both Stearns and Benton County Sheriff’s Offices along with the Sartell Police Department are investigating the matter further. Any new details will be provided in future media releases.
