On January 29, 2026, at approximately 5:10 P.M., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a pickup that had gone through the ice on Horseshoe Lake, near Eastway Court, in Munson Township. The caller said the driver was safe and out of the water.
When deputies arrived, they observed the front half of 2006 Chevrolet Silverado submerged in the lake. The driver, Joshua Blommer, 30, of Richmond, was able to escape unharmed. Blommer was driving approximately 50-75 feet from shore when the front end of his truck broke through the ice and immediately sunk down. Blommer was able to quickly extricate himself from the truck. The ice in this area was measuring around 5 inches while the rest of the lake was believed to be approximately 19 inches. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office would also remind lake users that ice is unpredictable and has the potential to differ significantly in thickness in a short distance. When on the ice, caution is always advised.
