On Thursday March 19, 2020, the Stearns County Board approved an emergency declaration as it relates to county business and COVID-19 pandemic. The declaration closes the Administration Center, West Service Center and Melrose Office to the general public for conducting overall business.
In an on-going effort to reduce and mitigate risk to staff at the Stearns County Sheriff Office, and in general common practice with the rest of the county as it relates to COVID-19 concerns, the following changes have been made to certain operations of the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. These changes will go into effect at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20th until further notice.
The Law Enforcement Center (LEC) lobby will be closed to general public Monday through Friday, except for Tuesdays and Thursdays for gun permit applications.
All other business, including data requests, can be conducted via telephone, 320-259-3700 or by email to sheriff.records@co.stearns.mn.us.
Gun Permits
Permit to Carry applications will be accepted on:
Tuesdays – 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Thursdays – 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Applications will not be accepted outside of those hours and we request that your application be completed and include a clear copy of your driver’s license. Please have the correct fee as we are unable to make change. We accept cash or check. No debit or credit cards.
Permit to Purchase applications will be accepted during those hours as well; however, we highly encourage permit to purchase applications be sent by mail to:

Civil Process
The Sheriff Office is suspending all civil process service except for:
Emergency court orders
Orders for Protection
Harassment Restraining Orders
Orders deemed necessary to be served by the judicial system

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the public for being patient during these ever-changing times and while these reduced lobby hours and new procedures are not ideal, they are necessary in the COVID-19 climate we are currently living in.
