Matthew Abeler has been named the May Student of the Month for Upsala High School. Matthew is the son of Bill and Marie Abeler. Matthew participates in Basketball, Drama Club, Band and Choir. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Upsala Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Matthew also serves the community in numerous youth group activities and working at Camp Lebanon. Matthew has been named to the “A” honor roll and has also been named a subject area student of the month numerous times.
Matthew’s favorite class is Digital Media Arts because “it’s always fun to plant creative seeds in the soil of media and watch ideas sprout uncontrollably, then weed out the flaws, but cherish the ingenious. In short, it’s oodles of endless entertainment.”
Nathan Hillman, Director of Youth and Family Ministry for the Community Covenant Church in Upsala, states, “Matthew has always displayed a high degree of achievement, consideration, and faith. He is a consistent example amongst his peers in many areas of his life and is not afraid to speak out when he believes the truth is at stake.”
Matthew says the most valuable academic activity is reading in his World Literature class because, “You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.” ~ C.S. Lewis. Besides reading, Matthew also enjoys music, songwriting, basketball, 2D visual art, and writing.
Matthew’s advice for classmates and underclassmen: “High school is like the wind, grab hold of the momentary and ride it out with integrity. Take courage to encourage your peers, and always, always stand up for what is right.”
