Watercraft Accident

On July 25, 2022, at approximately 1:09 PM, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received multiple emergency calls reporting a watercraft accident on Sauk Lake near the address of 41053 Sauk Lake Road in Sauk Centre. The Sauk Centre Police Department, Sauk Centre Fire Department, Sauk Centre Ambulance Service, Life Link Helicopter, and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Upon arrival it was determined that an 18-foot Crestliner boat driven by Michael Dunfee, 48, Sauk Centre, struck a two-person kayak being operated by Thomas Hegdal, 59, and Susan Hegdal, 62, of Fort Collins, Colorado. Thomas sustained injuries, and Susan sustained serious injuries in the accident. Thomas and Susan initially received medical care at the Sauk Centre Hospital. Susan was transported by Life Link Helicopter and Thomas was transported by Sauk Centre Ambulance Service to the Saint Cloud Hospital for further medical care. Dunfee and his passengers were not injured in this incident. No impairment was involved in this incident, and it remains under investigation.
